How Does a Computer Work?

This is a video post format example. It supports all WordPress common embed features for videos.

Nowadays, everyone knows how to use a computer. However, not many people are familiar with how a computer actually functions. A computer primarily carries out any task in three stages:

  • Input: Every task begins with an input stage. You provide input, which can be in various formats—such as text, images, or videos.
  • Process: The data you provide as input is processed according to specific instructions. This process takes place inside the computer and is handled by the CPU.
  • Output: Once the input has been processed by the computer, the result is presented to you as output, typically displayed on a monitor.

Computer Hardware & Software

The physical components of a computer are known as hardware, while the programs that run within the system are called software. In simpler terms, software consists of elements that cannot be seen with the naked eye, whereas hardware refers to the physical parts you can easily see. Software is essential; a computer relies on it to function. For example, a mouse is hardware, while an operating system is software. A computer is built upon a combination of hardware and software, and it operates through the interaction between the two.

What is a File System?

In a computer, various documents are stored as individual files. Applications that you download are also stored as separate files. The operating system manages this storage; it handles the organization and management of these files. This system for managing files is known as a “file system.” Files are categorized into different types within this structure. Storing various types of data as separate files on a computer is known as a “file system,” which is primarily managed by the operating system.

Types of File Systems

File systems in computers are classified in two ways:

1. Based on the Operating System

Depending on the operating system, file systems are categorized into three types:

A. File Allocation Table (FAT)
B. Global File System (GFS)
C. Hierarchical File System (HFS)

2. Based on Windows

In the context of Windows, there is a specific type of file system:

A. FAT File System

Types of Computers

The term “computer” is very popular today, and almost everyone uses it. When people hear the word “computer,” various images come to mind—such as its physical size—along with other related questions or concepts. There are different types of computers; some information regarding these is provided below.

Desktop

Desktop computers are commonly used in homes, as well as in schools and businesses. They make tasks easier to perform and offer excellent processing speed. A desktop computer consists of components such as a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and CPU.

Laptop

Nowadays, laptops are also widely used. A key advantage is that they do not require a constant connection to a power outlet; thanks to an integrated battery, a user can continue working for four to five hours without being plugged into a power source. Laptops are highly portable—much like mobile devices—and can be used virtually anywhere.

Tablet

A tablet is referred to as a handheld computer because it can be easily held in one’s hand. Tablets do not have a mouse or a keyboard; instead, users can perform typing and navigation tasks using a touchscreen. An example of this is the iPad.
